Careers Programme

How do we measure the quality of our careers education?

The careers programme is measured through student evaluations of the range of careers experiences encountered. We also analyse Clere School students’ destinations post-16 and compare these with Hampshire averages over time. This influences our careers education planning.

In addition to this, The 2014 Gatsby guidance is used to benchmark our provision and help us to identify areas of strength and development.

The Year 11 Activity Survey is used to measure our pupils post-16 destinations. From this, we can determine how many of our pupils are going on to post-16 education, employment or training.

What has been the impact of our careers education?

Students at The Clere have more time on their timetables than in previous years devoted to careers as a result of the introduction of The Clere Lectures and fortnightly PSHE lessons. Previously, careers was delivered within the tutor programme.

Students report that they have been challenged and inspired in their PSHE lessons. In our 2019 student survey, 86% of KS3 students said that they enjoyed their PSHE lessons. In the evaluation of careers focused Clere Lectures, 94% of Year 7 said that they had learned what it was like to do a range of jobs and what they would need to do in school to achieve these aspirations. The ‘What’s my Line’ activity was the best reviewed.

An increasing number of Clere students are attending Sixth Form Colleges/Schools (Fig 1). In 2014, 52.2% of our students went to Sixth form. This has increased to 61.6% in 2018. This rise reflects our ambitious and academic curriculum for all our pupils and particularly our middle and high attaining pupils on entry.

Interestingly, far more of our boys and girls attend sixth form colleges than the Hampshire average. 56% of boys (compared with 44% boys in Hampshire) and 68% of girls (compared with 54% girls in Hampshire).

The Clere school has very few pupils who are not supported to enter employment, education or training. Again, these figures are better than the Hampshire average.
