The Clere Library is a welcoming place for all students.  It is open from 8.30am to 3.10pm every school day, as well as hosting homework club on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays from 3.10 to 5pm.  It is an inviting place where students come for study and relaxation during break and lunchtimes to meet with friends or catch up on revision.

Each Autumn, all Lower School students have a library induction session with our Librarian, Ms Klepfer, to familiarise them with the Eclipse Library System; how to find resources for studies and some introductory skills to help them as they become digital citizens and researchers.

We have fiction and information books on all sorts of subjects as well as study guides. Books are loaned for two weeks, which can be easily renewed via the Eclipse system, either by the Librarian or Library Prefect. The Librarian is always interested in which books you would recommend and refreshes the stock every term, so please do not hesitate to talk to Mrs. Klepfer.

Reading for pleasure is a key part of the National Curriculum.  The Clere supports this by fostering a whole school reading culture.  A reading book is part of your essential kit and students are expected to have one in their bag at all times.  This may be a book from home or one from the library. If you have any spare time during the school day students make he best use of that time by reading their book.

The Accelerated Reader programme is run together with the Library, English department and Learning Support Base.  Who work together encouraging fluency with reading.  This in turn helps with success across all areas of the curriculum.  Students are expected to read for 10-15 minutes a day (a great pre-bedtime ritual).  This can be recorded in the reading log in their Student Planner.  Each student will have a STAR reading test upon joining The Clere and reading targets are set each term.  There are fun incentives for students so ‘get your read on’!

There is a House Reading Tournament.  Students get house points for returning books on time, borrowing the most books, competing in the Accelerated Reader quizzes and The Poetry by Heart Competition.  Also for taking part in the Millionaires Club, book groups, annual Spelling Bee, and for completing their Reading Bingo cards.

There are also computers in the library for research, homework and educational games.  We ask that all students have a Hampshire County Library Card so they can access the great resources of the public library, as well as their amazing e-resources such as the E-Encyclopaedia Britannica.  If you are not already a member of Hampshire libraries please contact Ms Klepfer for an application form.

Library Prefects

We have sixteen library prefects.  These students have shown a love of reading and a keen interest in the library.  They have all been trained in how the library works and have passed a two part proficiency test.  They are here to help the library and the school community.  It is not all hard work though - library prefects are looking forward to a trip to Oxford this Autumn to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Alice in Wonderland. If you love books and would like to join our team of prefects please do put your name on the waiting list.
